Blood Pressure Monitoring

Overview

At The Pharmacy Network, our pharmacists provide blood pressure monitoring to help you better understand your heart health, detect potential problems early, and monitor how your blood pressure is tracking. High blood pressure (hypertension) often develops without obvious symptoms, which is why regular checks are recommended by the Heart Foundation.

This walk-in service is available across our Canberra pharmacies — The Pharmacy on Bunda, The Pharmacy on Northbourne, and The Pharmacy on Franklin — making it a fast and convenient way to check your blood pressure without needing a GP appointment.

Requirements

No booking is required for this service; we take walk-ins.

To get an accurate blood pressure reading, we’ll ask you to sit quietly for 5–10 minutes before the test. This helps avoid results being influenced by recent activity like walking or climbing stairs.

Why Blood Pressure Monitoring Matters

Blood pressure is one of the most important indicators of cardiovascular health. Persistently high blood pressure can increase the risk of:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Kidney disease
  • Heart failure

According to the Heart Foundation, around one in three Australian adults has high blood pressure, and many are unaware of it. Regular monitoring helps identify potential issues early so appropriate treatment and lifestyle changes can be considered.

How Our Pharmacists Can Help

During a blood pressure check at The Pharmacy Network, our pharmacists will:

  • Measure your blood pressure using a validated clinical device
  • Explain what your reading means
  • Identify whether your blood pressure is within the recommended range
  • Provide lifestyle advice to support heart health
  • Recommend follow-up with your GP where needed

Pharmacists play an important role in cardiovascular health monitoring, as recognised in the PSA Professional Practice Standards.

Who This Service Is Suitable For

Blood pressure monitoring may be helpful if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with high blood pressure
  • Take medication for hypertension
  • Have a family history of cardiovascular disease
  • Have risk factors such as diabetes, smoking, or high cholesterol
  • Want a quick blood pressure check near you

Many people also use pharmacy blood pressure checks to monitor their blood pressure between GP visits.

What to Expect at The Pharmacy Network

Blood pressure checks are quick and conducted in a private consultation area at The Pharmacy Network. Our pharmacists will ask a few brief health questions before taking your reading.

Our pharmacists will clearly explain your result and what follow-up – if any – is required, and will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you have. They will also provide you a record of your results, which you can retain for future reference or take to your doctor if needed.

We aim to provide a fast and convenient service while ensuring accurate measurement and appropriate interpretation of results.

When Referral Is Recommended

A single blood pressure reading cannot diagnose hypertension. If elevated readings are detected, our pharmacists will recommend follow-up with your GP, who can arrange further monitoring or treatment if required.

This collaborative approach supports safe, coordinated care, consistent with Australian primary healthcare practice.
