You must have previously been diagnosed with mild atopic dermatitis by a medical practitioner to access this service.

Pharmacists are not permitted to treat moderate or severe atopic dermatitis.

What Is Atopic Dermatitis?

Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes dry, itchy, and inflamed skin (healthdirect.gov.au).

  • Common symptoms include:

  • Dry, cracked skin

  • Red, inflamed patches

  • Itching (which can be severe)

  • Flare-ups followed by periods of improvement

Eczema often varies over time, with periods of flare and remission (healthdirect.gov.au).

Who This Service Is Suitable For

Pharmacist treatment is appropriate for mild flare-ups of previously diagnosed eczema.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Have been previously diagnosed with eczema by a doctor

  • Are experiencing a mild flare-up

  • Have localised symptoms

  • Do not have signs of infection or severe disease

Pharmacists do not diagnose new eczema — if your symptoms are new or unclear, referral is required (NSW Health, 2026).
