Emergency Contraception

Overview

At The Pharmacy Network, our pharmacists provide Emergency Contraception to help reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. This is a time-sensitive treatment, and accessing it as soon as possible improves effectiveness.

Our pharmacists offer same-day emergency contraception at The Pharmacy on Bunda, The Pharmacy on Northbourne, and The Pharmacy on Franklin, providing a fast, confidential, and accessible service when you need it.

Service Requirements

Our pharmacists will need to speak to the person who will be using this medication, even if it’s over the phone. There is information our pharmacists need to gather to ensure the safest and most effective option is supplied, and there is information that needs to be provided to the person taking this medication.

What Is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception is used to help prevent pregnancy after:

  • Unprotected sex

  • Missed contraceptive pills

  • Condom breakage or failure

There are two main oral options available:

  • Levonorgestrel (not effective in the 3 days leading up to ovulation)

  • Ulipristal (More effective in the 3 days leading up to ovulation)

These medicines work by delaying ovulation and do not terminate an established pregnancy (healthdirect.gov.au).

Why Timing Matters

Emergency contraception is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse.

  • Levonorgestrel works best within 72 hours

  • Ulipristal works best within 120 hours (5 days)

Earlier treatment increases the likelihood of preventing pregnancy (healthdirect.gov.au).
