Travel Health
Overview
At The Pharmacy Network, our pharmacists provide Travel Health advice and support to help you prepare for safe and healthy travel. Whether you’re travelling overseas or within Australia, planning ahead can reduce your risk of illness and ensure you have the right medications and vaccinations.
Our pharmacists offer convenient travel health advice at The Pharmacy on Bunda, The Pharmacy on Northbourne, and The Pharmacy on Franklin, making it easy to access guidance before your trip.
Service Restrictions
There are a small number of vaccinations that Pharmacists are not permitted to initiate and will necessitate referral to your GP or a travel health doctor.
If you require prescription medications (such as for prevention of malaria) that cannot be provided without a prescription, our pharmacist will refer you to your GP.
Requirements
To determine what vaccinations are required, our pharmacists will need to see your complete vaccination record as well as a detailed itinerary for your travels. Vaccination requirements can differ based on the specific regions you’re visiting within a country. The length of protection that a vaccine provides varies depending on the disease; our pharmacists will need to know when you were last immunised against certain diseases in order to make a recommendation.
Why Travel Health Matters
Travelling can expose you to different environments, infectious diseases, and health risks that may not be present at home. Preparation is important to help prevent illness and manage existing conditions while away.
The Australian Government Department of Health recommends seeking travel health advice well before departure to allow time for vaccinations and planning (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2023).
How Our Pharmacists Can Help
At The Pharmacy Network, our pharmacists can:
Review your vaccination history & travel itinerary
Provide advice on recommended travel vaccinations
-
Discuss whether you may need prescription medicines (e.g. malaria prevention) and refer you to a GP where required
-
Recommend over-the-counter travel essentials such as motion sickness treatments, diarrhoea management, and first aid supplies
Provide guidance on preventing illness while travelling
Help you prepare a travel health kit
Providing advice on safe medicine use and preventive care is consistent with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia Professional Practice Standards (PSA, 2017).
Travel Vaccinations
Our pharmacists can provide certain travel vaccinations, depending on your destination and individual needs.
Some vaccines (such as yellow fever) require referral to a specialised provider, while others may be available in pharmacy.
Travel vaccination recommendations depend on:
Your destination
Length of travel
Planned activities
Your medical history
Your vaccination history
Up-to-date advice is important, as requirements can change (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2023).
Who This Service Is Suitable For
Travel health advice is recommended if you:
Are travelling overseas
Are visiting regions with different health risks
Need vaccinations or preventive medications
Want advice on staying healthy while travelling
Are looking for travel health advice near you
Ideally, you should seek advice at least 4–8 weeks before travel to allow time for vaccinations where needed (Department of Health and Aged Care, 2023).
What to Expect at The Pharmacy Network
Our pharmacists will discuss your travel plans, including your destination, duration, and planned activities. This helps us provide tailored advice based on your individual risk.
Where needed, we will refer you to a GP or specialist travel clinic for vaccines or prescription medications that cannot be provided in pharmacy.
When Referral Is Needed
Our pharmacists will recommend referral to a GP or travel clinic if:
You require prescription-only travel medicines
You need specialised vaccinations (e.g. yellow fever)
You have complex medical conditions
Your travel involves higher-risk destinations or activities
This ensures you receive comprehensive and appropriate care before travelling.
