Did You Know? Too Much Vitamin B6 Can Be Harmful!

Posted by Caroline I The Pharmacy Network on 22nd Jan 2025

We often think of vitamins as safe and essential, but did you know that taking too much vitamin B6 may cause side effects?

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has reported an increase in cases of peripheral neuropathy—nerve damage causing numbness, pain, or weakness in the hands and feet—linked to excessive vitamin B6 intake. This can happen when people unknowingly take multiple products containing B6, similar to accidentally overusing paracetamol when combining cold-and-flu tablets, painkillers, and flu drinks.

The TGA is now reviewing stricter controls on high-dose B6 supplements to ensure safer use.

What can you do to Stay Safe when taking Vitamin B6

Check your labels: If you’re taking a multivitamin, energy supplement, or fortified foods, make sure you’re not doubling up on B6. B6 can appear on labels as Pyridoxine, pyridoxal and Pyridoxamine as well as B6.

Experiencing side effects: Followup on any new symptoms you experience with your healthcare professional e.g tingling in the hands or feet.

Ask us for advice: We can help you choose supplements that suit your needs without exceeding safe levels.
