Information
Differin treats acne with a potent retinoid: Adapalene. Differin is the first (and only) acne-fighting retinoid available over the counter.
Adapalene works in three ways:
1. Treats: Acne deep in the pores at the source to reduce redness and underlying inflammation
2. Prevents: New acne from forming by increasing cell turnover
3. Restores: Your skin's natural texture and tone
Who can be recommended for Differin?
- It is indicated for the treatment of mild to moderate comedonal and papulopustular acne (blackheads, whiteheads & pimples) of the face, chest or back.
- Can be recommended from 12 years to adults.
- Pregnancy Category D - Don't use
- Breastfeeding - can be used; however should not be applied to the chest.
Ingredients
Active ingredients: Adapalene 1mg/g
Inactive ingredients: Carbomer 934P, PEG-20 methyl glucose sesquistearate, glycerol, squalane, Disodium Edetate, Methylparaben, Poloxamer 182, cyclomethicone, Purified water and Sodium Hydroxide.
Preservatives: methyl hydroxybenzoate, propyl hydroxybenzoate, phenoxyethanol
How To Use
- Differin should be applied once a day in the evening before bedtime.
- Ensure skin is clean and dry before application. Cleansing with a gentle cleanser is recommended prior to application.
- A thin film should be applied to the entire acne-affected area(s), avoiding eyes, lips and mucous membranes.
- Differin is NOT a spot treatment - it should be applied to the entire acne-affected area.
- Encourage the patient to try not to touch the treated areas overnight.
- Ensure adequate SPF protection during the day.
- It may take 4-8 weeks to notice an improvement, and more improvement after further use.
- If there is no improvement after 8 weeks, refer to a Healthcare professional.

Caution: Side Effects:
- Common Side effects include dryness, redness, irritation and burning/stinging & retinization.
- Retinization - There is generally a "purge" period where acne may worsen, which is not unique to adapalene. This is the skin adjusting to a new regimen. These symptoms usually subside after a few weeks.
- Do not use with other topical acne products or treatments unless advised by a Healthcare Professional.
