Winter Skin SOS: How to Treat & Prevent Dry Skin during Winter
Posted by Caroline Wightman l The Pharmacy Network on 1st Jul 2025
At The Pharmacy Network, we've been caring for Canberra's health - and skin - for over 50 years. As your trusted Canberra pharmacy, we know a thing or two about the toll our winters can take on your skin. While our frosty mornings might be beautiful, they can leave skin dry, cracked, and uncomfortable. And with the coldest months still ahead, it's no surprise we're seeing more customers visit our pharmacies with concerns about dry skin, itchy patches, and irritated skin barriers.
So to acknowledge Canberra's version of Dry July, we’re sharing simple, effective ways to help you to manage dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin and restore your skin’s moisture and comfort.
What causes winter dry skin?
Cold winds. Low humdity. Indoor heating. These all contribute to dry skin.
- Cold, dry air strips away natural oils.
- Hot showers can weaken the skin barrier.
- Indoor heating reduces air moisture.
- Not drinking enough water slows skin hydration from within.
Our top tips for protecting your skin:
- Switch to a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser: Harsh soaps can worsen dryness. Look for cream-based cleansers or soap-free options.
- Moisturise often—especially after washing: Use thick, therapeutic moisturisers or ointments while your skin is still damp.
- Protect problem areas: Use gloves outdoors and cotton socks overnight with heel balm for cracked feet.
- Avoid long, hot showers: Keep showers short and lukewarm to prevent skin dehydration.
- Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air.
- Hydrate from within: Keep up your water intake even if you don’t feel as thirsty in winter.
