Planning a holiday is exciting, but preparing for any health hiccups along the way is essential to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here’s a list of must-pack pharmacy products to keep you feeling your best while you explore new destinations.
1. Stomach Upset Solutions
Changes in diet, water quality, or simply the excitement of travel can lead to tummy troubles.
Make sure to bring:
- Anti-diarrhoea tablets for quick relief from any unexpected stomach upset.
- Ready to drink rehydration sachets, powders or tablets are essential for replacing lost fluids and electrolytes.
- Antacid solutions for relief from heartburn or indigestion after those delicious but unfamiliar meals.
2. Falls and Scrapes
For any adventure or accidental bumps along the way, pack these basics:
- Antiseptic cream or wipes to clean cuts and scrapes and reduce the risk of infection.
- Adhesive bandages are handy for small wounds.
- Elastic bandage wraps are useful for minor sprains or strains during hikes and walks.
3. Emergency Essentials
Whether you’re flying, sightseeing or trekking, tired legs, blisters and injuries can ruin your day fast!
- If travelling long distances by aircraft, pack a pair of compression socks or stockings.
- Avoid blisters by packing Compeed blister patches to assist with cushioning and protect against further rubbing, ideal for long days on your feet.
- Prevent blisters from forming in the first place, especially in new shoes by using an Anti-Friction Stick or bandage toes
- Traveling to windy, dry, or sunny destinations can leave your lips feeling dry and cracked so pack an SPF Lip Balm to protect your lips from sun damage and keep them moisturized, especially when outdoors.
- Going off grid? Pack some tweezers, gauze pads and medical tape just in case.
- Pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen are essential so you dont waste time shopping for solutions for aches, fevers, or inflammation.
4. Travel-Size Toiletries
Save space and stay fresh by packing:
- Dry shampoo, conditioner plus compact toothbrush and toothpaste for a quick refresh after long travel days.
- Hand Sanitizer and Wet Wipes to keep your hands clean when soap and water aren’t available.
5. Prescription Medication
When travelling abroad, it’s important to be aware that some countries have specific regulations around prescription medications. Certain drugs that are legal in Australia may be restricted or banned in other regions. To avoid complications at customs or with local authorities, only carry the amount of medication you need for your trip and be sure to carry them with you in their original packaging. Make sure to have a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor that details all of your medications, their dosages, and the reasons you take them. This documentation can be crucial if you need to prove your medications are for personal use or in case of a medical emergency where you require refills.
6. Travel Vaccines
Finally, don’t forget to research and update necessary travel vaccines for your destination. Stay informed by checking the Smart Traveller website to know exactly what vaccinations are required or recommended for your destination and consult with your pharmacist well ahead of your holiday to discuss which vaccines you may need. If you reside in Canberra, our pharmacies can help you prepare for the majority of standard travel vaccines you may require.
Common travel vaccines include:
Hepatitis A and B: Often recommended for many tropical destinations.
Typhoid: Especially important if visiting areas with questionable water hygiene.
Influenza Vaccine: If you’re traveling during flu season or to regions where the flu is common.
By packing the right pharmacy products and working with your pharmacist, you’ll be prepared for anything that comes your way during your travels. With a well-stocked travel kit, you can spend less time worrying about health problems and more time enjoying your adventures.
Safe travels!
