Shingles (Herpes Zoster) Vaccination

Effective Protection Against Shingles and Its Complications

If you've ever had chickenpox, the virus that causes it remains dormant in your body. This virus can reactivate later in life, causing a painful condition known as shingles (herpes zoster). The shingles vaccine is a safe and highly effective way to prevent this reactivation and its debilitating complications.

What is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful, blistering rash, usually on one side of the body. The pain can be severe and, for some, can persist for months or even years after the rash has cleared—a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Why Get Vaccinated?

The Shingrix® vaccine, available at our pharmacy, provides over 90% protection against shingles and PHN. It is the most effective way to prevent the significant pain and disruption to daily life that shingles can cause.

Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?

The shingles vaccine is recommended for:

  • Adults aged 50 years and over.
  • Immunocompromised individuals aged 18 years and over.

The Shingrix® vaccine is funded under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) for eligible individuals, including people aged 65 and over, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over and people aged 18 or over considered at increased risk of developing herpes zoster.
