Meningococcal Vaccination

Life-Saving Protection Against a Devastating Disease

Meningococcal disease is a rare but extremely serious bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord lining) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). It can develop rapidly and be fatal within hours. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent it.

What is Meningococcal Disease?

Caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis, this disease can cause permanent disabilities such as limb loss, hearing loss, and brain damage. There are several strains, with the most common being A, B, C, W, and Y.

Why Get Vaccinated?

Vaccination is a life-saving measure that protects against this fast-acting disease. Different vaccines are available to protect against the various strains.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

Vaccination is funded under the National Immunisation Program (NIP) and recommended for:

  • Infants: Protection against strains B and ACWY.
  • Adolescents: A free vaccine covering the ACWY strains is offered through school programs in Year 10.
  • Individuals with specific medical conditions.

Catch-up vaccinations and private vaccines are available for those not eligible under the NIP.
