Important Protection for Travellers and People in Mosquito-Risk Areas
Japanese encephalitis is a rare but serious disease spread by mosquitoes. It can cause inflammation of the brain, leading to long-term complications or death. There is no specific treatment, so prevention is essential.
What is Japanese Encephalitis?
JEV is found in parts of Asia, the Torres Strait, and some areas of mainland Australia. Many people have no symptoms, but severe illness can cause sudden fever, headache, confusion and, in rare cases, coma.
Why Get Vaccinated?
Vaccination is the best protection if you live in or travel to areas where JEV occurs. It’s especially important for people spending time outdoors, working with or near pigs, near mosquito habitats, or in rural settings.
Who Should Get the JEV Vaccine?
- People living in or frequently visiting areas in Australia with identified JEV activity
- Travellers spending a month or more in JEV-affected areas, or anyone spending time in rural/outdoor settings with high mosquito exposure
- Certain workers exposed to mosquito-rich environments
Two JEV vaccines are available in Australia, with schedules depending on age.
