Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination

Protecting Against HPV-Related Cancers

The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus that can cause a range of cancers and diseases in both males and females. The HPV vaccine, Gardasil® 9, offers safe, effective, and long-lasting protection against the HPV types that cause most related cancers and genital warts.

What is HPV?

HPV is a group of viruses spread through intimate contact. While most infections clear up on their own, persistent infections can lead to cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and throat.

Why Get Vaccinated?

The HPV vaccine is critical in the prevention of the HPV disease. It works best when given before a person becomes sexually active, but it can still provide protection for adults who have not been previously vaccinated.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

The HPV vaccine is offered for free to adolescents aged 12-13 through the National Immunisation Program's school-based program. Catch-up programs are available for older teens. Adults who missed the vaccine can also receive it privately.
