Hepatitis A & B Vaccination

Protect Your Liver with Hepatitis A & B Immunisation

Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are viral infections that attack the liver, but they are spread in different ways and can be prevented with safe and effective vaccines. Whether you're travelling overseas or have certain lifestyle or medical risk factors, vaccination is key to protecting your long-term health.

What are Hepatitis A and B?

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease spread through contact with the faeces of an infected person, often via contaminated food or water. It causes an acute illness but does not become chronic.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection spread through infected blood, semen, and other body fluids. It can become a chronic, lifelong illness, leading to serious health problems like cirrhosis (liver scarring) and liver cancer.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?

  • Hepatitis A: Recommended for travellers to countries with moderate to high rates of Hepatitis A, and for individuals with specific medical or occupational risk factors.
  • Hepatitis B: Part of the standard childhood immunisation schedule in Australia. It is also recommended for adults who were not vaccinated as children, healthcare workers, travellers, and others at increased risk.

A combination Hepatitis A and B vaccine is also available for convenience.
