DEX is a complex carbohydrate drink formulated by anaesthesiologists that assists you to prepare and recover for surgery. It is a liquid meal that is safe to have before your anaesthetic and helps eliminates the usual hunger and thirst that precedes fasting for surgery. DEX meets the strict fasting guidelines that recommend clear fluid preoperatively.

Stop eating at midnight

Drink 1st Dex when you wake up

Drink 2nd Dex 90 mins before your admission time (you can drink both drinks at the same time)

Stop eating at 7:00am

Drink 1st Dex at 11:00am

Drink 2nd Dex 90 mins before your admission time (you can drink both drinks at the same time)

Replace 1st adult Dex with 10mls/kg (Up to maximum of 200mls)

Replace 2nd adult Dex with 10mls/kg (Up to maximum of 200mls)

For best results, consume two serves of Dex before surgery

Oral diabetic medications may be consumed on the day of surgery - sugars should be monitored
