Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccination

Protect Yourself From a Contagious and Sometimes Serious Illness

Chickenpox causes a blistering, itchy rash and fever. Although many children recover well, chickenpox can be more serious in adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems.

What is Chickenpox?
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It spreads easily through coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with blisters. Complications can include skin infections, pneumonia, and, rarely, brain inflammation.

Why Get Vaccinated?
Vaccination helps your body build protection before you’re exposed and lowers your chances of becoming seriously ill or hospitalised from chickenpox. Vaccination also helps protect people who cannot safely receive the live vaccine, such as pregnant women and some immunocompromised people.

Who Should Get the Chickenpox Vaccine?

  • Teenagers and adults who haven’t had chickenpox or the vaccine as children: Two doses 4+ weeks apart.
  • Healthcare workers and household members of immunocompromised people should be vaccinated if not immune.
