Understanding Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

At The Pharmacy Network we aim to keep you informed about health matters that may affect our patients and the broader community. We thought you might like to know more about Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus similar to the common cold that has been in the news a lot lately.
What is HMPV?
First detected in humans in 2001, HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes infections similar to the common cold or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Symptoms often include cough, fever, runny or blocked nose, headache, and tiredness. While it usually results in mild illness, it can lead to complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia, especially in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.
It’s important to note that non-diagnosis of HMPV is common, as its symptoms closely resemble those of COVID-19, the flu, and other respiratory illnesses. Currently available rapid antigen at-home medical tests are not equipped to detect HMPV, meaning you may be unaware you have it and left wondering what is afflicting you.
How Does HMPV Spread?
The virus spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.
Prevention Tips:
Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Respiratory Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid Close Contact: Stay away from individuals who are sick, and if you're unwell, limit contact with others.
Clean Surfaces: Regularly disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
What to Do If You Have Symptoms:
If you experience symptoms such as cough, fever, or difficulty breathing, consider consulting a healthcare professional. While there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, rest and keeping well hydrated can help alleviate symptoms.
